Discussion with the Provincial Fisheries Minister
As we are National Fisheries Solidarity Movement working with all the working people especially small scale fishing communities, a discussion has been organized by the NAFSO Galle district partner organization to discuss deeply regarding the Harmful fishing practices in the sea & coastal resource management with the provincial fisheries minister Mr. V.K. Indika in south to find a solution for these growing problems day by day. This was been held at Galle district fisheries office between the NAFSO team including 30 fisheries leaders, district coordinator as well as the General secretary of World Forum of Fisher people’s (WFFP) / the national convener of NAFSO Mr. Herman Kumara and the provincial fisheries minister. Especially the member of the NAFSO policy studying committee also participated on the occasion. After this discussion the minister had come to a clear agreement to give an opportunity to have a discussion with the Government Fisheries Minister as soon as possible. As the second fact he promised to inform the DIG (main police officer) to get an immediate legal action against the harmful fishing practices. Finally we could come these agreements with him and our fisheries leaders as a result of the discussion. We would like to emphasize to the responsible authorities in Sri Lankan government including fisheries minister our investigations will be continuing until win the rights of fisherman.
