Declining of fisheries resources in the sea has been identified as a threat for the local fisheries sector in Sri Lanka. So that, New state fisheries Minister, Dilip Wedaarchchi has ordered to ban fishing operations using Lyla and Surukku nets which are methods developed by fishers from January 1st of 2019.
Fishers, especially from Puthlam district, conducted several protests against these fishing methods and asked to ban it. National Fisheries Solidarity is among the front on the fight against destructive fishing practices.
