A
regional seminar was organized in Yalpadi hall on 2019.06.29 in Jaffna with the
participation of 40 members, who represented the Northern Province fisher
people committee in Manna, Killinochchi and Jaffna. The land issue in Jaffna,
Mullathiev, Killinochchi and Mannar was taken to the discussion in the seminar.
According to the discussion, the people who displaced in 1990 were not resettled yet properly. There is no
systematic process for that. Mullathive
people are facing difficulties due the land grabbing. Many lands have been occupied by the military
forces. It is 85% out of whole land. It has released only 15% of the land for
the people. Only people want to go their
own land but government officers do not take actions to release land for the
people. Government should introduce a
sustainable solution as soon as possible.
Although the government took some decisions to resettle the internal
displaced people in 1990, it was unable to solve the problem properly. The participants came to an agreement to meet
the Governor of the Northern Province and relevant officers to be released the
land in Mullathive district. As well as, it has taken a decision to organize a
protest and March in district level and national level in order to release the
land. At the end of the seminar, they
organized a media briefing to highlight the findings of the seminar and nature
of the land issue in the north.
