Every year on the 16th of October NAFSO celebrate world food day. We
know today millions of world population suffers from shortage of food.
We know thousands of these people suffer from malnutrition, lack
drinking water, live in areas not suitable for living.
According
to the current estimates 740 million people go to sleep at night without
food. Their standard of living is deteriorating day by day. They and
their children are malnourished. Pregnant mothers suffer from
malnutrition. South Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, suffer the
most. The current COVID epidemic has exacerbated this situation. Present
situation clearly shows the failure of world development efforts. It
shows us the failure of globalization. It also tells us that we must
cultivate our own food and only the unity of the poor can help them
selves. NAFSO has realized this situation long ago and have started
working with fisher communties, farmers, plantation workers to Stregthen
their food security by promoting home gardening and environment
friendly cultivation in our program areas. So on this world food day we
emphasize our communities the importance of cultivating our own food and
the need for maintaining our food security.
