The Gender Development program of the NAFSO organized leadership training for village and district level leaders of the "MARUMALARCHI" District Women Federation in Batticaloa. Facilitators motivated the participants on How to identify and analyze the people's issues, how to organize society, how to build up good leadership and how to improve leadership qualities. Mr. M.S. Jaleel - National Resources person and Mr. Anthony Jesudasan - Project Coordinator of NAFSO conducted the training. Mrs. Lavina Hasanthi - Gender Development Coordinator of NAFSO, Ms.R. Nirosha - District Animator of NAFSO and R.Tishanthani - Volunteer of DIFSO supported the program. 26 Leaders participated.

NAFSO (National Fisheries Solidarity Movement), organizes fishermen to lobby the government to defend their rights and to bring about good environmental practice in coastal areas. ...NAFSO has helped a fishing community to take legal action against a proposal to build a five-star hotel on a mangrove where fish spawn."We are not against hotels, because they bring tourism and income. But 3,000 families and 15,000 fishermen use this lagoon and all of them could be affected by the developments. Only 200 would be employed by the hotel.
