The women of Sri Vimukthi Fisher Women‘s Organization launched a protest campaign at the DS office at Negombo today demanding re-establish their Samurdhi welfare scheme, the cut down safety net support they received from the government under new scheme call "Aswesuma".
Women leaders demand not to cut the only welfare facility for their survival and push them into further difficulties.
"Our children are going to schools in starvation. They get faint as no breakfast for them. That is when the time we are receiving Samurdhi funds. What will happen to them when there is no samurdhi funds? We are down with COVID, XpressPearl Disaster and economic and multiple crises in the country. When government cut down the small amount they give us, we will further down."
A woman leader explained their situation.
"We have written all these in our petition we submitted to Divisional Secretary today. Let us see what will be the government response is? " said Deepa Subashini, the coordinator, SVFWO.
